A deflection magnetometer measures the field lines of a magnet or magnets placed near to it by the amount of deflection caused by the bar magnet.
This particular example is in good condition with some minor scuffs and scratches which are pictured. One such scratch is in a straight line on the glass and was presumably made by a previous owner to help mark the line for 90° of deflection (perpendicular to the wooden stems where the magnets would sit). The glass frame on this model is hinged to swivel open which would allow cleaning, repairs or a closer look for a more accurate measure. Despite its age, the magnet can still spin very easily.
