The images on a CineSpinner (TM) come to life and animate continuously as the CineSpinner (TM) gently rotates at the end of its string by the natural movement of the air around it. These elegant little movie machines rival the classic motion picture toys of more than a century ago. Contrary to popular belief, they're not holograms. Surprisingly, the technology, in one form or another, has been around for centuries!

Made of sturdy imprinted acrylic and comes packaged with a hanging string. Diameter 140 mm (5.5"). Suction cup window hanger included. The 102 mm wire hanger provides ample room to permit the CineSpinner to rotate freely from its string.

Simply explained, the technique combines parallax perception (your angle of view) with moire-style multiple-line patterns to create the illusion of motion. When a scrambled image layer is viewed through a striped decoder layer, a series of sequential pictures is revealed to your eye, and your brain links this succession of images together, creating the illusion of motion.

Who Created Them?

Artist and inventor Rufus Butler Seder is known the world over for his eye-popping, show-stopping LIFETILES installations: large-scale, optical glass-tiled murals that appear to come to life and move when the observer walks or rides by them. Rufus has created LIFETILES murals for the Smithsonian Institute, the San Francisco BART subway system, national museums, zoos, aquariums and other public places around the world.

The success of LIFETILES inspired Rufus to develop the optically animated artwork and gift items you see here. When Rufus designs any one of these pieces, his goal is to capture the signature movement of the subject he's depicting. "I want to make the observer feel the weightless thrill of a dancer's leap or the elastic coil and spring of a running cat," says Rufus. "When I succeed, I feel as though I've created a little bit of life itself!"
